Overview & History

Delver’s Square is the bustling, high-energy epicenter of adventuring culture, commerce, and daily life in Ptolus. Originally named Runihan Square, the plaza was constructed to honor the ancient folk hero Abesh Runihan. A massive, weathered 14-foot stone statue of Runihan stands resolutely at the center of the square, erected over a heavily trafficked public fountain.

The square’s history shifted dramatically when modern explorers discovered that the foundations right behind Runihan’s statue cracked open to reveal the Delver’s Stair—a grand, reinforced stone staircase plunging deep into the subterranean depths. As wealth, relics, and monsters began pouring out of the ground, the square rapidly transformed from a quiet civic plaza into a booming frontier marketplace. Today, it stands as the primary commercial and logistical launchpad for nearly every major expedition into the undercity, packed day and night with heavily armed mercenaries, eccentric treasure-hunters, and shrewd merchants.

Established Commercial Matrix

The square is bordered by a permanent, highly secure circle of businesses explicitly catering to the adventuring trade:

  • The Ghostly Minstrel: The legendary multi-story tavern, inn, and restaurant serving as the primary safe haven and rumor mill for the party and local adventuring groups.

  • Myraeth’s Oddities: The premier boutique for buying and selling miscellaneous magic items, potions, rings, wands, and scrolls. Myraeth strictly does not deal in any weapons or armor or craft magic items.

  • Rastor’s Weapons & The Bull and Bear: The designated, high-security locations in the square for purchasing traditional arms, armor, and used magical combat equipment.

  • Ebbert’s Outfitters: A handy, highly economical one-stop shop entirely dedicated to standard mundane adventuring gear and dungeoneering supplies.

  • Danbury’s Tavern: A quieter, upscale Midtown tavern catering explicitly to spellcasters. It serves as the exclusive physical meeting point to contact a representative of the secretive Dreaming Apothecary to commission custom magic items via dream transactions.

  • St. Gustav’s Chapel: Located directly across the cobblestones, this holy sanctuary serves as the primary local source for securing healing potions, antiplagues, and consecrated items.

Midtown Security: Watchhouse Post 4

  • Overview: Situated right on the northern edge of the square, this heavily fortified, stone-reinforced guard post ensures that the explosive energy of Delver’s Square doesn’t spill over into open riots. Because magic is culturally ubiquitous and low-level spellcasting surprises no one , the guards stationed here are highly experienced veterans.

  • Response Matrix: Minor brawlers and rowdy drunks are handled by low-level beat guards , but unruly adventuring parties or rampaging dungeon monsters are met with high-level martial units supported by tactical spellcasters. The post enforces strict city laws against compulsion magic, mass destruction spells (like fireball), and any necromancy carrying the evil trait.
