Your Character's Level & Rank: How It Works Now

A guide for players and GMs — no rulebook degree required.

The big idea

Your character sheet keeps track of how much your hero has grown — all by itself. You never type in a level or do the math. The app remembers what your hero looked like on day one and notices when you make them stronger.

01

The Level 0 lock

When you finish making a new character, you and your GM agree the starting character looks right, then lock the Level 0 receipt. Think of it as a snapshot of your hero at the start of their adventure: it cannot be changed or deleted, and gives the app a reliable point of comparison.

02

You play, you grow, the app counts

In Savage Worlds, an advance can come from changes such as:

  • Raising an attribute, such as Agility from d6 to d8
  • Raising a skill, such as Fighting or Notice
  • Taking a new Edge
  • Buying off a Hindrance

When you save your character sheet and one of these things changes, the app counts an advance automatically. Smart tracking recognizes the meaning and point cost of a change: upgrading a combat Edge from Brawler to Bruiser applies the advance correctly, while a free lineage Edge does not incorrectly cost an advance. If you undo a change, the app un-counts it too, so the level reflects the sheet as it is now.

03

Watch your rank climb

Your advances add up to a rank — your hero's experience level:

AdvancesRank
0–3Novice
4–7Seasoned
8–11Veteran
12–15Heroic
16+Legendary

A badge at the top of the character sheet shows the rank and advance count, such as “Seasoned · 5 advances.” Players and GMs see the same badge.

04

The ledger: “When did that happen?”

Click the badge to open a ledger of changes since the Level 0 lock. It records the starting lock, advances with the trait or Edge taken, and ordinary character edits in clear categories such as core traits or inventory. Each entry includes a date and time.

Progression milestones are highlighted in the character's color so advances stand out from everyday edits like buying gear or taking notes.

What this is — and isn't

  • It never gives you anything. You and your GM decide when your hero earns an advance.
  • It never blocks you. There is no approval step; edit your sheet whenever you want.
  • It never tattles. The ledger is simply a record for when anyone is curious.
  • Power Point spending doesn't count. The ledger tracks character growth, not normal power use.

GMs see the same badge and ledger on the read-only character sheet. When a question comes up, they can find the entry and get back to the game — without approving advances, entering levels, or policing players.

Your Rules, Our Unbreakable Table.

You run the game your way. The app keeps the numbers straight so you never have to argue about them. Now go adventure.
