“Come for the stone-cut stout, stay to watch two bricklayers settle a ledger in the dirt ring. Just don’t ask for light wine.”

Overview

The Hammer & Hog is the undisputed cultural and social anchor of northern Midtown’s Stonelost enclave. Nestled tightly near Eriskal Street alongside the local dwarven forge and mason shops, the tavern is a lively, sprawling establishment that caters heavily to the neighborhood’s hardworking artisans, as well as the nearby human population they have befriended.

The tavern serves three vital functions: a sanctuary for surface-dwelling exiles, a business incubator for an emerging brewing operation, and the host of Midtown’s infamous outdoor Wrestling Ring.

Atmosphere & Design

The architecture reflects the dual nature of its community—rugged, functional, yet incredibly well-built.

  • The Commons: The main taproom features heavy, oversized timber tables and masterfully laid flagstone floors (courtesy of local patronage from Sholod’s mason shop). The air smells perpetually of roasted pork, sawdust, woodsmoke, and a sharp tang of fermenting mash.

  • The Wrestling Ring: Located in a secure covered courtyard just outside the Tavern, this dirt-and-sawdust ring is the tavern’s beating heart. While mostly used for evening entertainment and boasting matches, it serves a practical civic purpose under Haldan Kaled’s informal law: it is where drunken arguments, trade disputes, and personal grievances are formally settled. No weapons, no lasting malice—just grappling until someone yields or gets pinned.

  • The Spiritual Drift: For months, the taproom has also served as a makeshift chapel. Before Willie Gramm began physically clearing out the memory-wiped Shrine of Trudd, he spent his evenings here. Sitting by the hearth, Willie began tending to the community’s fractured spiritual state by telling heroic stories to the children and offering practical mentoring to the laborers.

The Management & Staff

The Hammer & Hog is run by a tight-knit family team of four, who have recently gone from simple tavern keepers to ambitious business partners with the party.

1. Brokk Iron-Vein (Co-Owner / Head Brewer)

  • Description: A stocky, heavily scarred Stonelost dwarf who lost his left eyebrow to a forge accident years ago. Brokk handles the back-of-house operations, heavy inventory, and the mashing tuns. He is incredibly proud of his community’s resilience on the surface.

  • Motivation Quirks: Obsessed with cleanliness in his fermentation process to a degree that borders on neurosis. He carries a small silver stirring rod that he uses to test the bubbling yeast.

  • Brokk has enthusiastically partnered with Willie Gramm and Calebrimbor Algarvran. He is currently helping them refine their high-proof moonshine, “Trudd’s Reserve,” with the ultimate goal of aging it into a premier bourbon brand.

2. Orlyv “The Pillar” Kaled (Co-Owner / Ring Referee)

  • Description:* A distant, lower-branch cousin of Haldan’s family who sided with the surface exiles. Orlyv is massive, missing several teeth, and commands the taproom with a booming voice. He serves as the head bartender and the official referee for the Wrestling Ring.

  • Motivation Quirks: He hates asymmetry. If a chair is slightly askew or a mug is placed crookedly on his bar, he will stop speaking mid-sentence to fix it. He is also a hopeless romantic who secretly writes terrible love poetry about surface flowers.

  • He holds deep respect for Willie’s dedication to the neighborhood. He ensures that a private booth and a free plate of roasted hog are always waiting for the War Cleric.

3. Martha Iron-Vein (Brokk’s Wife / Front-of-House Manager)

  • Description: A sharp-witted, fiercely protective dwarven woman who handles the tavern’s books, coin-counting, and customer relations. Humans and dwarves alike fear her glare; she can calm a rowdy table with a single pointed look.

  • Motivation Quirks: She never forgets a face or a debt. She has a photographic memory for ledger lines and will casually remind a patron of a 3-copper tab they owed from three months ago.

  • While skeptical of “adventurers,” she is a massive fan of Calebrimbor’s culinary insights.

4. Sela Kaled (Orlyv’s Sister / Head Chef & Server)

Description: Nimble, quick-tongued, and far more progressive than her traditionalist elders in Kaled Del, Sela coordinates the kitchen and manages the servers. She is the one who originally suggested integrating human recipes into the menu to attract the neighboring district folk.

  • Motivation Quirks: Constantly hums dynamic, fast-paced human tavern jigs while working. She has a habit of flipping kitchen knives or coins between her knuckles when she’s stressed or thinking.

  • She treats the party like local royalty. She is currently considering asking Calebrimbor for assistance in improving recipes in the kitchen, eager to learn how his Alchemist techniques can optimize cooking times and food preservation for large tavern rushes.
