🌊 Overview & Current Status

The Oceanside Province commands the easternmost edge of the Tarldet Plains, controlling the region’s vital shoreline along the Inland Sea. Historically, its identity has been split: it is a land of sprawling coastal farms, quiet fishing villages, and deep agrarian roots, yet its people harbor a romantic, irresistible infatuation with the open water. This maritime longing regularly draws its youth away from the plow to seek seafaring adventures in the northern territories of House Marsa.

The province is anchored by two massive, vastly different coastal hubs. In the north sits Oceanside, a bustling merchant city of 37,000 people conducting vital international trade with distant nations like Phi, Lopan, and the Eastern Territory. In the south, perched on towering cliffs at the mouth of the King’s River, looms the monumental city of Ptolus.

The eruption of the war with the Middle Kingdoms has plunged Oceanside Province into a state of sheer panic. Terrified that they will bear the absolute worst of the impending conflict, the province is caught in a vice grip between its ancient, landlocked imperial duties and the immediate, staggering reality of the war on its doorstep.

🤝 Inter-Province & Faction Relations

1. The Shadow of Ptolus: The King’s River Dichotomy

  • The Economic Magnet: While Oceanside historically struggled to establish deep-water ports, the presence of Ptolus on the southern cliffs completely bypassed this limitation. Ptolus handles the staggering, high-volume magical and exotic trade that the merchant city of Oceanside never could, creating a massive economic dependency. The entire province effectively feeds the metropolis at the end of the King’s River.

  • The Cultural Fracture: This proximity has accelerated the “romantic pull” of the sea. Local youths aren’t just fleeing to the north anymore; they are flocking to Ptolus to join independent mercenary companies, explore the dark subterranean layers beneath the Spire, or enlist under the Commissar’s banner.

2. The Friction with House Wenglid (Arcadia)

  • The Emancipation Shockwave: Oceanside is an agricultural export empire that has historically relied heavily on non-human slave labor to harvest the crops that feed both Ptolus and international trading partners. House Wenglid’s unilateral shift to phase out slavery has terrified the province.

  • The Conscription Loss: Unlike Arcadia, which immediately weaponized its newly freed slaves into foot soldiers, Oceanside views the 5-year military conscription mandate as a catastrophic drain on their agricultural labor force right when food hoarding is tanking the domestic economy. They comply out of absolute fear of Wenglid’s military superiority, but resentment is festering deeply.

3. The Northern Maritime Axis (House Marsa)

  • The Naval Deficit: Because Oceanside is historically “too poor” to divide its funds between building a massive sovereign navy and maintaining its sprawling agricultural lands, it relies entirely on the northern fortresses of House Marsa to patrol the upper waters of the Inland Sea. With the war pulling Marsa’s attention to the Straits of Thunder, Oceanside feels completely naked against potential amphibious assaults or pirate fleets backed by the Middle Kingdoms.

đź‘‘ Sovereign Loyalties & The Ptolus Pivot

Oceanside Province’s political alignment is driven entirely by immediate proximity, desperate self-preservation, and a sudden influx of holy zealotry:

  • The Hostage to the Spire: Oceanside’s open support for The Holy Emperor Rehobath Ylestos is the strongest and most immediate in the entire Tarldet region. Because the Holy Palace is physically sitting on the cliffs at the southeast tip of their province, the lords of Oceanside recognize that their lands are functionally the frontline shield for his claimant throne.

  • The Church’s Protectorate: The local populace, deeply tied to the land and the changing seasons, has historically synchronized its worship with Golarion light and life deities like Sarenrae. With Rehobath projecting his holy authority from Ptolus, the province has embraced a feverish, defensive religious fervor. They view their agricultural exports not just as commerce, but as a holy duty to sustain the true Emperor’s capital.

  • The Core Paradox: Despite their absolute loyalty to the Ptolus claimant, Oceanside is paralyzed by fear. They are acutely aware that if the Middle Kingdoms breach the western borders, the flat farmlands of Oceanside will be thoroughly trampled long before the rebel armies ever reach the heavily fortified gates of Ptolus. They are fanatically loyal out of necessity, realizing that the Commissar’s hardened veteran Janissaries are the only thing capable of keeping the province from being utterly wiped off the map.
